Guide in Buying the Perfect Down Comforter Set For Your Home July 21, 2010

Having a comforter makes your bedding more elegant and luxurious as it provides warmth and comfort as you lay in your bed. Though a comforter is usually used in countries with cold climate, there are already comforters, which are also designed for the summer season. One famous type of comforter is the down comforter, which is well known for its softness.

Down comforter is made from fine fluffy feathers of either a duck or a goose. Down comes in different shapes which can be one, two or three-dimensional. The shape or ‘cluster’ provides you with a warm feeling as it traps the air.

Duck and goose down are just the same as far as warmth is concerned. The only difference is that the clusters in a duck down are smaller in area. Manufacturers often offer higher amount of fluff in duck down to make it a full comforter.

In the U.S., the amount of fluff a down has is measured in “fill power”. A down is of good quality if it has a high number of fill power, say 600. A fill power of 700-800 is already an excellent one and above 800 is considered as superb quality.

If you are about to buy a down comforter, you should have an idea of what you really want especially in the fill power. The weight is also an important factor in choosing a down as it tells how much warmth it can provide you.

The heavier the comforter, the more warmth it can give. If you prefer one that you can use during summer months, you can go for a lighter one. For the winter, you may want to cuddle under a warm sheet and so you may get a comforter with a high fill power and heavier in weight.

Since down clusters trap more air, a light down comforter will provide you more warmth compared to a blanket made of synthetic fiber with the same weight. Another important factor in choosing the perfect comforter is the overall design.

The stitch pattern and thread count play an important role in keeping the feathers evenly distributed in the entire sheet. It is best to get one with quilted stitch pattern with a baffle to keep the feathers in their own clusters.

The quality of down comforters is still the best when it comes to bedding. With down, you can be assured that you are getting good quality that will last long and will surely provide you the warmth and comfort that you need.
